Visual Arts and Gallery

Boston Progress works to organize a series of exhibitions of Asian American visual artists, which take place at East Meets West bookstore and arts space. We bring together local and national talents so they can expose their work to the Asian American community, and the larger Boston area arts community. The vision of the exhibition series is to give the artists, especially under-exposed and often over-looked, a chance to present their artwork in a new context. Visitors to each showing get to interact with the artists in an unusually intimate way.

“Foundations: In The Raw,” featured the works of three powerful Asian American women: Diem Dangers, Theresa Hwang, and Sahra Nguyen.

“Transitions” featured the works of painter/community organizer Sophea Khem.

Our most recent exhibit, “we/me” features work from longtime community artists Wen-ti Tsen and Tri Quach (pictured right). It opened at the W/Y Gallery in Chinatown on Friday, May 4 of last year. Check back for news on gallery updates.

Welcome

Boston Progress Arts Collective is a community of API* artists that aims to create a supportive space and outlet for personal growth, creative expression, and artistic exploration. We strive to use art as an active means for mobilization and education within our communities locally, nationally, and beyond.

API* is a reappropriation of the term API, which was created by the US government to more easily categorize our communities. While API still stands for Asian/Pacific Islander, with the * we redefine and expand the term to include- but not limited to: South-, Southeast-, East-, Central-, or West-Asian, Middle Eastern, Arab, Pacific Islander, Oceanic, Americans of Asian decent, multiracial, adoptee, “other,” or however one chooses to represent their cultural/political/ethnic identity.

For decades, others have used the category API to tell us what we are to them . But now, we use API* to define who we are to ourselves.
