kay ulanday barrett is a performer, poet, educator, and martial artist. kay connects life as a pin@y-amerikan trans/queer navigating struggle, resistance, and laughter in the u.s. In Mango Tribe and in solo work, kay has featured in colleges, cafes, and stages nationally and internationally. honors to note: venus zine’s featured reader, LGBTQ 30 under 30 awards, Crossroads Fund individual activist award, finalist in The Gwendolyn Brooks Open-Mic Award, a feature in the documentary film BAKLA/TOMBOY: Filipino Gay & Lesbians in the U.S. and recently, contributions to Kicked Out Anthology released by Homofactus Press and LOUDmouth. for kay’s online swerve see: kaybarrett.net

There will also be a general meeting at the bookstore before the Open Mic so folks who are interested in learning more about Boston Progress or getting involved are encouraged to attend. These meetings are always open to the general public.

Boston Progress Arts Collective is a community of API* artists that aims to create a supportive space and outlet for personal growth, creative expression, and artistic exploration. We strive to use art as an active means for mobilization and education within our communities locally, nationally, and beyond.

API* is a reappropriation of the term API, which was created by the US government to more easily categorize our communities. While API still stands for Asian/Pacific Islander, with the * we redefine and expand the term to include- but not limited to: South-, Southeast-, East-, Central-, or West-Asian, Middle Eastern, Arab, Pacific Islander, Oceanic, Americans of Asian decent, multiracial, adoptee, “other,” or however one chooses to represent their cultural/political/ethnic identity.

For decades, others have used the category API to tell us what we are to them . But now, we use API* to define who we are to ourselves.
